Jamie is an emerging artist, having recently established Blue Nandina Studio on her journey to be a working artist. Working primarily in photograms and abstract painting, she has been creating works in various mediums for over 15 years. Her love of natural forms, color and the unexpected within the creative process have shaped her unique style.

Jamie was born and raised in Central North Carolina. Throughout her childhood she spent her free time outdoors surrounded by the plants and wildlife of the area. Her father, a landscape architect, was an important influence to Jamie’s view that natural elements and structured design could be melded. Throughout her adolescence her creative streak became more evident and all free time was spent on the project of the day. Summers were full of art camps and when high school art class was not enough, she created an independent study with a local clay worker.

After attending UNC Asheville her freshman year in college as a math major with no direct creative outlet, she realized that her need to create and had grown past a hobby and into a passion for art. She transferred to UNC Chapel Hill, majoring in art.  There, her interests settled into photography and in the color lab she began working with experimental processes. When she stumbled upon color photograms the technique became the focus of her studies. She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Art in 2002.

Without access to a darkroom, she worked in a frame shop in Chapel Hill and volunteered at the local art museums to stay close to her passion. To express her own creativity she began painting and her love of color and experimentation came together again in her abstract pieces on watercolor paper. She also created beaded jewelry and did site-specific murals for private clients.

In 2009 Jamie decided to get back to her photographic roots and embarked on her lifelong dream of being a working artist.  In 2010 she began building a darkroom and showing her work at local festivals and street fairs in the Triangle area. She and her husband currently live in Hillsborough, NC.
